Join a hard-performing team with heart!

At Code for Australia we're optimistic about the power of design and technology to tackle the big, complex challenges government is facing. We’d like to work with similarly optimistic folk who are comfortable juggling a few projects at a time and have eagle-eyed attention to detail.

We value systems thinking, pragmatic problem solving, gumption and the deep understanding of the role of digital in service transformation. Above all we value curiosity, passion, creativity and invention.

Why is this important to us

The Chief Operating Officer or COO is a permanent role based in Melbourne CBD working with a close, small, fast paced team. You will oversee and implement Code for Australia’s ongoing operations and procedures. It’s big.

You will be the company’s linchpin and often helm holder, working closely with the Managing Director and being responsible for all things operations. You will be an active team member, ready to wear a number of different hats or caps (if you’re a cap person) in our small organisation based on changing business needs and best use of your talents.

We’re looking for someone who has the capacity and commitment to work in alignment with our values, and who enjoys. You’ll have a technical bent or experience with IT. Don’t miss the opportunity to grow this exciting purpose-oriented organisation.

When you get the job, you will:

Coach & coordinate - Whether they are Fellows, our government partners, other team members, you are always focused on helping people solve real problems. You will also be confident liaising with clients directly regarding proposals, budgets, quality, and managing risks.

Bring people together, productively - You will bring your workshop planning and facilitation experience to the fore. You can also influence without direct authority and make the most of relationships and networks to secure outcomes.

Create a culture worth boasting about - You foster a high performing culture and will develop an environment of outstanding performance and delivery, through active and caring leadership.

Have an eagle eye on execution - You know how to manage teams and programs. You have enough experience to make solid management choices and oversee much of the implementation of Code for Australia’s strategy.

Seek out and share the best - You proactively contribute to organisational learning, promote knowledge sharing.

Communicate clearly - You can speak and write about our technology strategy to politicians, funders, and developers. You're able to make complicated ideas easy to understand.

Build our community - You'll balance technical rigor with healthy grownup working hours. You are familiar with agile development while providing space for professional development. You'll help train the next generation of civic technologists and through your coaching you will develop a highly motivated team.

Have a big appetite for new technology - we use collaborative and innovative approaches and tools (e.g. Slack, Trello, PipeDrive, Google Docs) and you will help us make us of the best tools as they become available.

Your Superpowers

  • You love people, and our community. Like, love them.

  • You dive in and get your hands dirty. You’d rather get started then get ready.

  • You appreciate and know how to hire talented people.

  • You have, or enjoy entrepreneurial or intrapreneurial work.

  • You have excellent analytical skills, but also know the value of qualitative insights.

  • You are passionate about building modern communities. You are a life long learner yourself, in fact you thrive on learning and do learn quickly.

  • Your ego comes second to organisational success.

  • No small imperfection, quirk or inconsistency escapes your attention to detail and quality. Data might be your best friend.

  • You’re not scared of telling the truth; to clients or your team.
