Background

Lowitja Institute is Australia’s only national Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community-controlled health research institute. It works for the health and well-being of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples through high-impact, quality research, knowledge exchange, and support for a new generation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health researchers.

Lowitja Institute has partnered with Code for Australia Institute to digitise its Cultural Safety Audit Tool and redevelop its website.

Code for Australia’s model has been successful in helping not-for-profit organisations across Australia embrace innovative technologies. It has a clear flat-rate fee structure, and because we are a social enterprise operating on a not-for-profit basis, we can provide high-quality work and independent advice at a lower price point than other agencies.

Digitising the Cultural Safety Audit Tool

Lowitja Institute has a Cultural Safety Audit Tool for individuals and one for organisations. Both tools are designed to assess the level of development in understanding critical elements of cultural safety and working to create culturally safe experiences for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals.

Code for Australia was engaged to operationalise both tools in the digital environment.

Lowitja Institute asked us to identify a viable platform that would be easy for people to use and sustainable for Lowitja Institute to maintain. Once the platform was chosen, the Code for Australia team was able to design and build an online audit tool that guides users through a series of questions and provides results and feedback at the end. The team also built the infrastructure for individuals and organisations to purchase access to the tool online.

Starting with a Minimum Viable Product

Lowitja Institute took the sensible approach of building a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) first. This has allowed us to work together to launch the tool quickly and then iterate based on user needs and feedback.

Code for Australia will continue to support Lowitja Institute as its digital partner by maintaining and building new features for the Cultural Safety Audit Tools.
